Workshop: Essential Hempcrete    SOLD OUT!

As SC continues to advance Industrial Hemp Production, we believe that building with Hempcrete is a progressive and sustainable building method for the future. Root down Designs is committed to working to advance Hempcrete in South Carolina! We’ve invited Chris Magwood down to Charleston to help guide us into this progressive method! At the Essential Hempcrete workshop you will learn how you can create a remarkable home insulation material from the hemp plant! This workshop is based on the new book, Essential Hempcrete Construction, written by course instructor Chris Magwood. Hempcrete (or hemp-lime) construction uses chopped hemp hurd (the woody core of the hemp plant) mixed with hydraulic lime to create an insulation material with excellent thermal, moisture-handling, fire-resistance, non-toxic and structural properties. Hempcrete is also a carbon sequestering material. In the Essential Hempcrete workshop, you will find out how hempcrete is made, see a slideshow of various Canadian and international hempcrete building projects, and gain an understanding of how, why and where hempcrete is an appropriate material choice. In the classroom, we will look at the costs, material sourcing and building science of using hempcrete on new building projects and renovations.

In the hands-on component of the workshop, you will learn how to assess the necessary materials and create a hempcrete mix that is appropriate for wall, floor and roof installations.  You will learn how to work safely with the materials and equipment used for hempcrete production. Every participant will leave with a hempcrete block they cast themselves! Chris’ Essential Hempcrete workshop is the primer you need to start making and installing your own hempcrete insulation! Date: Saturday, April 27, 2019 – 9am-5pm & Sunday, April 28, 2019 – 9am-5pm

We are excited to be partnering with the SC Industrial Hemp Association & The American College of Building Arts for this course!

Jose Jimenez – Senior Timber Framing Student @ The American College of Building Arts (ACBA)

Haven gotten his first undergraduate degree in Outdoor Education from Warren Wilson College in Asheville, NC, José Jiménez spent alot of time in the woods playing, learning, growing, teaching and sharing his love of the outdoors with people from all walks of life. After having spent some time in Alaska, Arizona, Hawaii, and North Carolina working as an outdoor educator Jose decided to make a shift and pursue a career in the building trades. He worked his way through a cabinet shop, framing crew, chair building internship, and eventually as a student at the American College of the Building Arts where he is a senior currently pursuing a degree in timber framing. The love of the outdoors along with his fascination of woodworking made natural building and timber framing a logical choice for him. He hopes to share his passion for woodworking and the outdoors to teach people the benefits of not just being outside but building with nature itself.
