APRIL MAGILL, Principal + Architect

APRIL MAGILL, Principal + Architect

April is a leading voice in the advancement of alternative, climate-smart & healthy building methods and has been a pioneer in the southeast.  She is an Architect, small business owner, Executive Director, and Adjunct Professor; April has been a keynote speaker and presenter to many organizations and universities over the past decade.

April has been a Charleston County resident since 2004 and has devoted her career to the advancement of sustainable architecture and affordable housing.  After advancing her career at several Charleston architecture firms, in 2011 she took a leap of faith and founded Root Down Designs, a women-led architecture firm dedicated to sustainable architecture and affordable housing in the south where she serves as the Principal Architect. April pioneered several carbon-negative and alternative housing prototypes in Charleston, such as a Rammed-Earth home and Compressed Earth Blocks. She has worked with multiple building jurisdictions in helping clients obtain building permits for alternative materials and healthy housing. Working with financially-challenged clients and creating affordable building options has been a strong tenant of the Root Down team.

As a way to educate about these healthy and natural building materials, she began teaching building workshops with a ‘community-building’ ethos embedded. April has led over 4 dozen community-building workshops and courses across the southeast, including educational institutions such as Greenville Technical College, The Governor’s School of Science & Math, and the American College of Building Arts.  She has led over a dozen community-building projects in the Charleston region, including work at MUSC’s Urban Farm, the Romney St. Urban Garden, Fresh Future Farm, and the earthen bus stop at Morrison Ave. Her passion for sustainable architecture and community-building workshops was noticed by The American College of the Building Arts, and she began serving as the Professor of Sustainable Materials in 2018

Always seeking and creating more pathways towards streamlined and affordable housing, she launched a for-profit entity, the Root Down House Plan Co. (founded 2020), which has a collection of 20 pre-designed house plans, specific to the south, focused on small to moderate-sized homes, including many ADU plans.   These highly detailed plans come with a ‘Healthy Housing’ specification package and have helped dozens of clients across the southeast navigate a complicated and expensive process.

After an incredibly successful ‘Charleston Hemp-Building Workshop’ in 2022 with over 100 participants, April created the latest chapter and now also serves as the Executive Director of the Root Down Building Collective, a 501c3 grassroots organization whose mission is ‘To Advance Regional, Climate-Smart, & Equitable Housing Solutions.’  Although a young organization, April and her board of 11 are already actively collaborating with other climate- and housing-based organizations, as well as working with Charleston City and County to help meet the carbon emission goals of the Climate Action Plans. The empowerment of communities is at the heart of her work; as an advocate for affordable and healthy building solutions, her passion for engaging with communities and involving people in the process of building is essential and a major passion. She is a true visionary for resilient and healthy buildings for a healthy future!

April also sits on the board of the Community First Land Trust, lives on James Island, and is a mom of two.

GINA IACOVELLI, Healthy Home Interior Specialist

GINA IACOVELLI, Healthy Home Interior Specialist

Gina has been an interior designer and architectural draftsman in Charleston, SC for over 10 years. She joined Root Down Designs in 2018 to re-introduce alternative building materials + advocate for affordable healthy housing.

Over the past 5 years, Gina has been studying scientific research and journals on redlist chemicals, VOCs, and other toxic materials commonly found in North American homes. Her focus was to understand how these compounds interact with our hot and humid Southeastern climate, leading to poor indoor air quality. With this information as a driving force, her designs are geared towards providing materials and fixtures that promote healthier living and encourage a better world through ethical manufacturing. In 2023, she earned a certificate from Parsons School of Design for ‘Healthier Materials and Sustainable Building.

In her free time, Gina makes sentimental keepsakes and memorial jewelry with human hair. Following patterns from the mid-1800s, she taught herself the ancient technique of weaving strands of hair into intricate and durable jewelry to keep close to the heart.  Check out her work!

WHY OUR CLIENTS LOVE RDD!

A few shining reviews about our work.

“I sought an architect with a “green” orientation to build a house on a tight oceanfront lot in Pawleys Island, SC and found April online. As an artist, I wished my home to be an artful yet practical living space to accommodate visiting friends and family. Because many generations of my family have vacationed at Pawleys, I wanted a 21st century home that subtly alluded to the rich history of the island. April quickly and competently translated my wishes into the design for a beautiful passive solar home.”

“Working with April Magill (the “Mud Queen”) has been an exciting, educational, and creative journey which helped me to reconnect with nature and connect more with my creativity. The earthen oven that was built for the International Gullah/Geechee Camp Meeting Center is a gift, delivered through the leadership and workshop of April Magill. I love building with April!!!

As a small, “green” school for special needs students, the idea of building a classroom using natural building techniques really appealed to us and our students. I contacted April and immediately I knew I had found the right person to help us make our dream come true. After we were awarded a grant, she designed a classroom that was absolutely perfect for the location, our needs and the local community. Because no natural building had been permitted in our area, she worked tirelessly to ensure every possible question about this building was anticipated, researched, and testing available before our plans were submitted for permitting. When we had difficulty finding a general contractor, she found the perfect contractor for our project. I was not only confident in her expertise, but depended heavily on her guidance in keeping the project moving forward within the time frame mandated by our grant. I realized then that while I had appreciated her skills as they pertained to our project, I had no idea how impressive her skills were to seasoned professionals. We were SO lucky to have found April! She has gone so far above and beyond all expectations.”

We brought April in to work with us and our builder on two very personal projects. First, was our home studio renovation. We wanted to add elements of nature seamlessly flowing with clean architectural lines.  April made sure that the project had just the right amount of interesting design elements; the use of flowing lines, steel walls, and open air spaces, made it so that the room is now a retreat to paint in.  The space was recently featured in Charleston Magazine. The second project was our 2 Queen Street gallery.  The building is from 1670, so updating the space so that it was a contemporary gallery space but still had the old world elements was the challenge of the project. April incorporated resin “light-reflecting” walls filled with reed grass into one part of the space which helped to mask the unattractive existing windows, yet still allow light to filter through into the space. Before and during both renovations April was able to incorporate ideas that tastefully added to the end result.

In planning, designing and building the addition on my house, April amazed me with her ability to understand and realize ‘my vision’.   Additionally, her vast working knowledge of contemporary construction and design trends is remarkable.”

“We met April Magill at a Board of Architectural review meeting where she was presenting a major downtown green project. As tough as the BAR can be they praised her concepts, drawing, presentation and style with enthusiasm.   As a builder who presents to the BAR regularly this task can be nerve wracking to even the toughest presenter.   As a homeowner we tasked April to design a outdoor living space for us to entertain, live and be private, similar to other small gardens in downtown Charleston.  Her designs are spot on.  Every small item we asked for was put into the design with expertise and artisanship.  April has also helped us source recycled materials to keep our budget in line and have our project be a green build. If you are considering April for an architectural project please do not hesitate to call me.” Kevin Meek, President, Rock Creek Craftsmen

“Hi April, just wanted to let you know how much I enjoyed your cob workshop. The topics we covered was enough to get even some of us rookies going! It came at the right moment for me to plan the cobbing of my own project so it was a wonderful experience. We had a big class and kudu’s to you for keeping us going! I made some fantastic new friends and already we are planning to get together to build a rocket oven (or two). You’re a caring and sharing person and we appreciate all that you do.”
